Causes
- Painting a warm surface in direct sunlight.
- Application of oil-based or alkyd paint over a damp or wet surface.
- Moisture escaping through the exterior walls (less likely with latex paint than with oil-based or alkyd paint).
- Exposure of latex paint film to dew, high humidity or rain shortly after paint has dried, especially if there was inadequate surface preparation.
Solutions
- Determine if blisters are attributed to heat or moisture by opening the blisters and examining the backside of blistered paint.
- If only the most recent paint applied has blistered, the blister was probably caused by heat. Remove blisters by scraping, then sanding; prime any bare wood and repaint with a high-quality exterior paint in the desired sheen.
- If blisters go down to the substrate, the blister was probably caused by moisture. In this case, remove blisters and more importantly remove the source of moisture. Prime all bare areas with a high-quality primer. Repaint the surface with a high-quality paint in the desired finish.
