Supporting Success: The Power of Mentorship for Women in the Trades

I first got into the trades 19 years ago after taking a Women in Skilled Trades pre- apprenticeship program that I completed alongside 19 other women who were looking to get into the industry - an industry full of career options including carpentry, electrical, and the painting trade. It was my safe place. A place of nurturing, support and learning without judgment, but eventually we had to join the real world. Walking onto the job site as one of the few women could be a lonely and daunting place. I often attribute my success and longevity in the trades to that course and its supportive group of women, which is why I believe whole heartedly that women-to-women mentorship in the trades plays a crucial role in the retention of women in the industry. Here are some reasons why:

  • Guidance and Support:

Women mentors provide guidance and support to other women in trades, helping them navigate the specific challenges and complexities faced by women in the industry. They offer valuable insights, advice, and practical knowledge based on their own experiences and this guidance helps women build confidence, develop skills, and make informed decisions about their career paths.

  • Networking and Connections:

Mentors can introduce women to a network of industry professionals, creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, and professional growth. By connecting women with others in the trades, mentors help them establish relationships and access valuable resources, which can enhance their career prospects and open doors to new opportunities. The best job I ever had was offered to me after a networking event. You never know where the next opportunity will present itself, but you need to be at these events to get these opportunities in the first place.

  • Role Modelling:

Mentors serve as role models for women in trades, demonstrating what is possible and inspiring them to reach their full potential. My favourite quote is, “You can’t be what you can’t see” - which is why I knew being on TV and representing women in the trades on a national platform was such a valuable opportunity for visibility and could help encourage other women and young girls to consider a trade. Seeing successful women in leadership positions or thriving in their trade-oriented careers can help dispel stereotypes and encourage women to pursue their goals with confidence and determination.

  • Emotional Support:

The trades industry is predominately occupied by men, and women may face unique challenges and biases. Mentors provide emotional support, understanding, and empathy, helping women navigate these obstacles and build resilience. Having someone who believes in them and provides reassurance can be instrumental in helping women overcome barriers and persevere. I found that sharing my own stories and having them validated by other women who had similar experiences made me feel not so alone in the industry.

  • Skill Development:

Mentors can provide guidance on skill development, helping women identify areas for improvement and offering practical advice on how to enhance their technical abilities. This can include hands-on training, sharing best practices, and providing constructive feedback to help women continually improve their skills and excel in their trades. Sometimes it’s easier to hear constructive criticism from someone you know has walked in your boots.

  • Career Advancement:

Mentors can play a significant role in advocating for women's career advancement in the trades industry. They can provide recommendations, endorse women for opportunities, and help them navigate the promotion and advancement processes. By actively supporting women’s career progression, mentors contribute to their long-term success and retention in the trades. I like the idea that I’m forging a path as I go, and making it a more approachable journey for women entering this profession after me.

The idea of entering and succeeding in this industry as a woman can be daunting. It definitely has its challenges, but I’ve also had amazing experiences over my 19 years in the trades working with and being mentored by passionate and knowledgeable women. I truly believe mentorship is critical for the retention of women new to the trades industry and I am excited to continue my mission to encourage more women to enter this incredible industry and help grow Women in PaintTM.
